The Coaching Box Mike Marzolf Golf meet one is in the books for Coach Marzolf and the Chase High Kats. It was dadgum good one. Two golfers have already punched their ticket to the state golf meet in May. In sand green golf, there are no Regionals. You just have to shoot a 95 at any point to qualify. As a team, shoot a 280 and you’re in. Well, not exactly 95 and 280, that might be tough. That score or better, I should say. Just to be clear. If you remember last year, one of our golfers made TV news when he qualified for state for the first time. That young man, Layd’n Hinderliter, has been fighting cancer since about third grade. The moment I saw his scorecard in McCracken last year and knew what he had done was one that I will never forget. Ever. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. The few weeks that followed were a blur for that young man. With not as much fanfare this year, it took him all of one meet to earn a spot as a junior. He shot an 84 to finish 5th. I was happy for him again, but this time in a different way. You see, he had a cancer treatment the week before the state meet last year and didn’t have the energy to actually play. We made the trip to gauge his strength at the time, but he wasn’t able to play So he still hasn’t gotten to play at state. This year it WILL happen. I am so happy for him. Eli Gillespie fired a 79 for Chase to tie for 2nd place at the meet. Layton Winkelman was just five strokes from qualifying and as a team, the Kats shot a 289 - nine strokes from earning a spot. Hopefully, we get there before the season’s end. After just three golfers last spring, I have eight out for golf this year. Fore!

Speed stacking requires a lot of focus, bilateral coordination and crossing the midline. The 4th and 5th graders upped the challenge by partnering up where each person controls one side of stacking in order to complete the entire cycle.
